SHOOT DAY INFORMATION


SHOOT DAY SAFETY

  • Always carry your gun in a slip (gun case) between drives
  • When on your peg and your gun is loaded, keep your barrels pointed skywards
  • When you reload your gun, shut the stock not the barrels, this way your barrels will not be pointing at the beating line when you shut the gun
  • Do not shoot low birds
  • If you don’t see sky under a bird, do not shoot
  • Do not shoot ground game, cats, hares, rabbits etc
  • Do not shoot birds that have passed over the gun line (only shoot between 10 o’clock and 2 o’clock) as it is unsafe for the Gun next to you or the
  • Picker-uppers” that are standing behind you
  • No shooting before or after the horn. The horn signals the start and finish of the drive
  • Make sure you unload on the signal to finish the drive
  • If you are unsure about where the beaters are, please ask
  • Wear hearing protection during each drive
  • There are no stupid questions

ETIQUETTE

  • Punctuality is imperative
  • Check you have sufficient cartridges for each drive
  • Carry cartridge bags on the gun line for extra ammunition
  • Excessive or loud talking prior to and during the drive is to be avoided as this alerts the birds to your presence prior to the drive and can also disrupt the concentration of other guns
  • No shots should be taken before or after the horn to start and finish the drive
  • Do not shoot low birds as this is not only unsafe for the beaters but not sporting
  • Do not shoot at your neighbours birds
  • Your shoot peg positions are allocated through the drawing of peg numbers at the start of the day
  • At the end of your day, take time to thank the Beaters and most importantly, the Keeper. Sport tips are a good way to do this and usually gets you a good day the next time you come
  • The shooting of a white pheasant – as deemed by the Keeper, traditionally incurs the payment of a gratuity
  • Please pick up all your empty cartridges
  • Cell phone use during the day is discouraged

DRESS

  • Gentlemen are expected to wear jacket and tie in traditional colours
  • Waterproof coat
  • Hat or cap
  • Waterproof boots or Wellingtons
  • Trousers, breeks or plus fours
  • There is a prize for the best dressed Gun in the field

AMMUNITION

  • Rathmoy requires the use of biodegradable wad ammunition. This can be purchased on the day for $18 per box and will be billed post shoot

START TIME

  • Please be at the Fish & Pheasant at 8:30am for the briefing and 9am start
